Starting to get the hang of the cnc mill and learning new techniques with it. I am able to introduce accuracies into my my work that i could only ever guess at before. I intend this year to make another half a dozen or so planes which i'll post some pictures. I've been getting some help with my photography and hope to be able to post better pics I am learning all the time I'm planebuilding and continually trying to improve my work.
One of the things i have found difficult was the knurling...there is a real art to this and i have tried various methods and i have now come up with using a cut knurling tool. Expensive but it gives nice results. My next move is to buy different sizes of knurling wheels. The ones i have are just on the fine side for my liking but they do produce a quality knurl. These planes are made from Navel brass CZ112 and a 01 toolsteel sole. They are double splay dovetailed together, a process than cant be done in wood. My blades are A2 and made by Karl Holtey. His blades are the only ones i'll use in my planes from now on. I have used and tried others but none come close to his quality and there is minimum sharpening time required. This year i want to concentrate on my own handle and front knob design. These are fantastic planes to use and i can see why they are Karl Holteys most popular. They are quite ugly in their original Norris form and weren't really a great seller but they have been transformed into beautiful looking and working planes by Karl and i only hope i have done them justice. On speaking with him about them he wishes he had called them something else. I might also create another page on building one from scratch. |
